Background of the Study

Kidnapping has emerged as one of the most troubling forms of criminality in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in areas where law enforcement is weak, and there are socio-political challenges. Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State has been severely affected by kidnapping, with criminal gangs targeting both locals and travelers. Kidnapping has not only led to loss of life and property but has also significantly hampered local economic development. Business activities, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, trade, and tourism, have been disrupted due to the fear and insecurity created by these criminal activities (Aliyu & Abubakar, 2024).

This study seeks to evaluate the economic impact of kidnapping on local economic development in Shiroro. By assessing how kidnapping influences business operations, investor confidence, labor markets, and general socio-economic activities, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the economic consequences of insecurity in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of kidnapping in Shiroro has raised concerns about its impact on local economic development. Businesses are unable to function optimally due to the fear of kidnapping, agricultural activities are disrupted, and local job markets are negatively affected. Despite the widespread understanding of the social implications of kidnapping, the specific economic consequences for local communities have not been sufficiently examined. This study intends to fill this gap by evaluating how kidnapping affects the economy of Shiroro LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the economic impact of kidnapping on local businesses and trade in Shiroro.

  2. To evaluate how kidnapping has affected the agricultural sector and productivity in Shiroro.

  3. To examine the broader impact of kidnapping on local employment and economic stability in Shiroro.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has kidnapping affected local businesses and trade in Shiroro LGA?

  2. What is the impact of kidnapping on agricultural productivity in Shiroro?

  3. How has kidnapping influenced local employment and economic stability in Shiroro?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Kidnapping has negatively impacted local businesses and trade in Shiroro.

  2. Kidnapping has led to reduced agricultural productivity and disrupted farming activities in Shiroro.

  3. Kidnapping has caused significant instability in local employment and economic conditions in Shiroro.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide much-needed insights into the economic implications of kidnapping on local economies in conflict-prone areas. By understanding the economic impact of insecurity, local authorities and policymakers can develop strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of kidnapping, promote business recovery, and restore confidence in the local economy.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Shiroro Local Government Area in Niger State, examining the impact of kidnapping on the local economy over the last five years. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining data from victims of kidnapping due to fear of retribution and the lack of comprehensive economic data during periods of insecurity.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Kidnapping: The illegal abduction and holding of individuals for ransom or other criminal purposes.

  • Local Economic Development: The process of improving the economic well-being and quality of life for a community through the development of local industries, businesses, and infrastructure.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The output of agricultural activities, such as crop production and livestock farming, measured in terms of yield or value.
